Forms of Remembrance, 2017

Site-specific installation-like photo exhibition
Pigment prints on DiBond
(Nos. 3, 4, and 12 in private collections)

EXHIBITED:
GALLERY LATERNA MAGICA, Helsinki, FI, 2017

My site-specific installation consisted of photographs of extensions of Gubbio and San Cataldo cemeteries extensions, a cubic installation construction, a votive lamp and a slowly rotating silk flower arrangement. The floor that was partly bedrock created for the installation a space that was more than neutral stage for the exhibition – the brick walls also contained fragments of earlier exhibitions.

The cemeteries I had photographed are part of a trend that started in late 19th century Italy where the cities of the dead were expected to be grandiose and uniform. Often these cemeteries both follow tradition and look for new seeking for a relation to modernism as well as time before Christianity.

The exhibition was supported by the Arts Promotion Center Finland.
